4 things to avoid when posting on a business blog

I have been trying to optimize  my website for a while now.  So, I have been reading all kinds of business blogs as research and asking my colleagues for advice. Christopher Duncan, a fellow writer and owner of Practical Strategy Consulting went out of his way to help me fine tune my blog and as a consequence gave me the idea for this post. Many people start a blog to help spread the word about their company but a lot of them fall victim to the same mistakes.

  1. Off topic posts – Business blogs appeal to a niche market. Think about it. If you go to the L.L Bean blog, then you are interested in the outdoors and you want to learn more about products associated with it. So that blog should write copy about the outdoors and not about current affairs or what the author did that weekend. (Just an example, don’t ban me Mr. Bean)
  2. Test your posts – First and foremost, use spell check! Nothing distracts a reader from your content like misspelled words. Everyone misspells on occasion so after you check spelling, let other people read your blog. Let some fresh eyes find the mistakes that you are overlooking.
  3. Don’t take yourself too seriously - I don’t mean to make a fool of yourself. A little humor goes a long way on a company blog but you don’t want to preach to your readers. It’s annoying and boring. A blog is a conversation with your readers so write like you talk.
  4. Respond to comments – Yes, it is time consuming to respond to every comment. It is also polite and the whole reason to have a blog in the first place. A business blog is a place to interact with your clients and potential clients. If you don’t take the time to talk with them then you are missing the point.

Did I miss any common blogging mistakes? If so, let me know in the comments.
